- When relocating
to the Islands, we recommend not immediately shipping all of your belongings or automobile. Most Islands offer fully furnished rentals. They generally including dishes, linens and most everything you will need. We recommend moving to the location and getting adjusted before shipping all of your possessions. Public transportation is good in the Islands and many jobs don’t require owning your own vehicle. Depending on the location you move to…you may find it easier to buy an "Island" car once you arrive. Think Jeep!
- Always remember that most prices in the Islands are negotiable. The best time to move to the Islands is in the Summer months, known as the "offseason". There are always people moving to and from the Islands, but typically the time when the most people leave will be at the end of tourist season, and a lot of rentals open up then. Landlords are more willing to negotiate prices in May or June as opposed to December or January.
- One of the best ways to get items to the Islands is via mail. Call ahead and set up an address with a mail service on the Island you are moving to. Then mail your items to yourself at your new Island address. It’s much cheaper than using a shipping service or paying additional baggage charges on the airline.
- If you have school age children, be sure to inquire about the islands educational system. Most Islands have decent public education, but we recommend private schools on most Islands.
- Before you relocate to any Island, get to know a little about the Island. As with any location it's possible find a great deal on a place but find out upon arrival that the location is not in a good area. There are Islands with very little crime, and Islands with high crime, just like anywhere else. Most Islands have a less than desirable area that may be difficult for newcomers to recognize, so make sure you talk with your new employer, locals, or even the Islands school board to make sure the area you’re moving to is suitable.
